An older business complex in the Mid-Atlantic is experiencing a renaissance. Anchored by a major tech company, new restaurants, and businesses are revitalizing the 1-acre park-like setting. This includes a restaurant with a cutting-edge wood-cladding façade.

ARL.now quoted the property owner of the complex as saying that the park’s restaurants will offer, "a seamless indoor/outdoor culinary destination” and that the “modified park will also host herb gardens and outdoor markets”. Sounds amazing and we want to go! We especially want to visit one restaurant where a renowned architectural firm designed a textural exterior to welcome diners.
Mataverde Sustainable Decking and Siding Solutions is privileged to be the distributor of the rainscreen system and the Cumaru wood siding material used in this project.
Exterior Design or Artwork? Both.

No utilitarian exterior here.
The exterior was expertly designed to be as much a part of the dining experience as the interior. Custom milled wood siding boards were used to create a sculptural, multi-dimensional façade.
The base of the siding is an open-joint rainscreen system. Atop the rainscreen boards, varying widths of vertical Cumaru hardwood dance across the wall of the restaurant. Shadows and light play against the natural wood colors. The effect is eye-catching, modern, and elegant atmosphere, drawing you in.
How Architectural Design Becomes Reality
There are so many dimensional aspects [to this design], with varying depths, installing them correctly was paramount."
- Charles Bonser, Technical Director
Behind the scenes, there were many choices to make for seamless, secure installation while staying true to the design.
Charles Bonser is the Technical Director and Project Manager at MataverdeDecking.com. Mataverde is the distributor of both the rainscreen system and the hardwood siding used in the project. Charles assisted the team with installation assistance and technical drawings.
"There are so many dimensional aspects", said Charles. He continued, "Installing them correctly was paramount."

The façade was created using the Climate-Shield Wood Rainscreen System, designed for easier vertical installation of the field siding that eliminates all the furring strips. It's a time and labor saver, especially for custom designed architectural elements. Climate-Shield rainscreen created a strong, durable siding as the base for the custom exterior.
Cumaru Brazilian hardwood was chosen for the rich red- to golden-brown range of hues. A high density hardwood, Cumaru is incredibly decay resistant and requires no painting or staining. These decisions ensure that the design lasts decades with minimal maintenance.

Ensuring Precise Installation of Design Elements
Architects often struggle with the accurate installation of custom exterior elements as designed. However, the Climate-Shield Rainscreen System can simplify this process.
For this restaurant exterior, the dimensional variations in the façade required the fasteners to be hidden from view while still fastening securely. The clean, flowing lines would be interrupted by a fastener showing along the siding boards, taking the eye away from the overall effect.

By choosing to install with the Climate-Shield rainscreen system it gave the advantage of fastening the rainscreen from behind, hiding the fasteners from the eye.
This technical shop drawing shows a sample batten layout from above, and you can see how the rainscreen clips are designed to fasten behind the rainscreen boards, where they won't interfere with the visual design.
The aircraft grade aluminum components like the Rainscreen clip used in installation allows for easy adjustments during construction, providing flexibility to accommodate design changes. Architects can maintain control over their vision and achieve precise results.
The patented Climate-Shield CS2 clip is all aluminum for strength and longevity, and automatically sets the correct rainscreen gap.
Plus, since it is designed to hide the fasteners behind the siding boards, there was no sacrifice of strength. The patented CS2 rainscreen clip fastener is 100% metal, no plastic. All the rainscreen components are strong and can last for decades.

The Benefits of Rainscreen for Longevity
The main advantage of a rainscreen system is its ability to promote the building's exterior longevity. The airspace created between the open joint rainscreen siding and the structure allows proper ventilation and moisture management. This design effectively prevents issues like rot, decay, and insect damage that often affect conventional siding.
By using the Climate-Shield Rainscreen System, architects ensure that the restaurant's exterior remains resilient and visually striking for years. Additionally, the system and the use of durable hardwood siding reduces potential costly repairs, offering significant cost savings over time.
Advantages of Cumaru Wood for Exterior Siding
Cumaru wood is an excellent choice for exterior rainscreen siding due to its natural beauty, sustainability, and exceptional durability.
Its captivating color range, from reddish-brown to deep golden brown, adds elegance to any restaurant design. The vertical installation of Cumaru wood with the Climate-Shield Rainscreen System enhances its unique grain patterns, creating a visually appealing façade.
