Long Lasting Ipe Decking After 17 Years

The Ipe boardwalk in Mystic, Connecticut still looks terrific after 17 New England summers and coastal winters. Ipe decking was selected for this project in 1995 for its strength, beauty, durability and low lifetime costs. Ipe can withstand all sorts of punishment from hurricanes and blizzards to the foot traffic of hundreds of thousands of visitors including my daughter's high heels for the Junior Prom (pictured on the right with her sisters).

Ipe decking in 5/4x6 sizes was chosen because it is strong enough to withstand the elements and affordable enough to make this project a reality. Some people think that Ipe is high priced but it really comes down to 'how long you want your decking to last'. If you are looking for long term savings, Ipe wood and Ipe decking are actually the lowest cost exterior wood materials available. Ipe decking can be purchased in the same price range as synthetic decking materials and Ipe is an all natural real wood product.

Stainless steel decking screws were used to fasten the Ipe boards to the deck joists. Stainless steel was selected because it will last as long as the Ipe decking. A screw down assembly was chosen because of its incredible fastening strength and powerful lateral bracing. The graining of the Ipe decking boards add to the rich contrast and character of the boardwalk.  After 17 years the Ipe wood has weathered gracefully and still looks naturally beautiful (just like my daughters).
