Amazing Wood RainScreen in Upstate New York

RGR Landscape, a full-service architectural design, and landscape architecture firm, in Manhattan, set out to create an artful integration of buildings and landscape for the exterior design of a residential home built directly into the banks of the Hudson River, in upstate New York. The architect and home owners appreciated the beauty and benefits of the rain screen concept. Since the home is along a body of water, they recognized the value of using a rain screen system to minimize interior mold and mildew. Particularly in this setting, they have a beautiful, natural exterior siding and a healthy interior environment. The best of both worlds!

Why was Climate-Shield™ selected as the rain screen system?   The design and construction team appreciated the design flexibility and ease of the Climate-Shield rain screen system during construction. No wood furring strips were required which saved time and labor costs. This also reduced the amount of obstructions on the building's envelope, whereby greatly improving the performance of the rain screen design.

Why this hardwood siding species? Ipe siding was selected for its high performance, natural beauty and amazing durability. Because the Ipe hardwood was available in many sizes, the design team chose to incorporate the strength and beauty of this remarkable hardwood species into other structures onsite, including the pergola which connects the two buildings.

Why the brown siding color? The design team preferred the stunning color range and graining pattern of Ipe in comparison to other rain screen wood siding options being considered for this project.  Penofin, a natural oil finish, was chosen to enhance the natural colors of Ipe hardwood and to help blend and enhance the tropical graining of this highly durable siding material. The homeowners loved the rich brown tones and embraced the natural range of colors found in exotic hardwoods.

Originally, the home owners wanted the siding to weather-out to a natural silver-gray.  However, once they saw the material with a coat of Penofin oil finish, they decided going forward, to maintain the finish as it will not only protect the material, but also add warmth and depth of color to the rich brown tones.

One of the beautiful things about choosing a high density hardwood siding material like Ipe is that you can always change your mind about the finish color as your preferences evolve.  The owners are free to allow the wood siding to naturally develop a silvery gray patina over time, should they desire.
