Because Cumaru is a high-performance exterior hardwood decking and siding, it is often used on exterior projects where natural woods are required. Initially, Cumaru ranges from lighter browns to reddish browns with a coarse and varied grain pattern. This 'rustic mahogany' appearance can be enhanced and maintained over time with an appropriate UV inhibiting sealer. Alternatively, you can allow your Cumaru hardwood to mature to a silvery gray ‘weathered wood’ patina. Whatever your project goals are, you have options to choose from.

Regardless of your appearance decision, there are two steps that are imperative for successful and long-lasting Cumaru hardwood decking and Cumaru siding projects; proper acclimation and initial UV protection.
Proper on-site acclimation allows the wood to move and adjust its size - before installation. This way, further wood movement over the life-time of the project will be seasonal movement only.
UV protection, at least initially, minimizes potential surface checking will further allow the wood to adjust as it seasons. See finishing options here.
If you like the look of the UV inhibiting finish for your Cumaru hardwood decking and siding, and wish to maintain it, simply re-finish your hardwood as desired, whenever you feel it needs a refresher coat.
Another option is to allow your exterior hardwood to weather to a silvery gray patina over time. The good news is that you can change your appearance decision at any time - check out care and maintenance options here.
