Do you want a modern home design that uses natural wood for its warmth? Are you looking for sustainable, low-maintenance materials for your project? How about gorgeous colors and patterns that set your home apart? Machiche wood siding can be the answer. Check out this California home as a fantastic example.
FSC Machiche wood siding wraps the exterior wall and continues through the outdoor kitchen on this renovated home in California. (Photos courtesy of Holly Wymss of Dixieline Lumber and Home Centers.)
In the surfing mecca of Cardiff-By-The Sea, California, the natural vibe of premium Machiche hardwood siding was chosen for the exotic graining and color. It contrasts beautifully with the bright and dark stucco finishes. The design accents include exterior wood siding, interior wood doors, and a modern wood pergola.
Dixieline Lumber and Home Centers, a Mataverde partner in southern California, was the supplier for this FSC certified Machiche hardwood siding project and Martin Silva was the designer. They graciously shared the details with us. (And if you love this home pack your surfboard because, as of this writing, this home for sale!)

Wood sided houses, or houses using wood as an accent, do not have to look old fashioned or traditional. Mixed with stucco, steel, or natural stone, it can also create a warmer style and feel to a modern home exterior without taking anything away from the design.
Using natural wood siding gives you lots of options for home exterior colors, styles, and textures. Martin took full advantage of this in the outdoor spaces he designed. Frederico Escobar of California Development & Construction Corp. brought the project to life.
To enter the home, you pass through an inviting wood surround doorway. It welcomes you with a softer feel to balance the cool, white stucco and expansive glass windows around it. The interior of the front door is also covered in Machiche.
Behind the home, an outdoor entertainment room is accessed from the living area through a moving glass wall. This huge glass wall slides easily behind the Machiche wood cladding like a pocket door, allowing the living space to seamlessly flow to the outdoor kitchen and the Machiche pergola covered dining area.
It is sustainable architecture: Mataverde Machiche (pronounced "Mah-CHEE'-chay") is a 100% FSC® Certified high-density hardwood. Sometimes called 'Mayan Mahogany', Machiche is sustainably harvested and affordably priced.
Machiche is a very durable material. It has the natural characteristics found in all premium hardwoods: high density, super strong, insect- and rot-resistant. It is also rated twice as hard as oak. Since it is kiln-dried, there is low shrinkage and minimal checking (splitting at the ends).
It is a truly low-maintenance option: Machiche doesn’t require staining, painting or complicated clean up. If left to weather naturally, it will age to a mellow silvery patina. Or, you can apply UV protective sealant to maintain the like-new look of Machiche graining and color lasting for years. (We recommend Penofin Hardwood Formula which can penetrate high density hardwood).
It is as beautiful as it is strong: Mataverde® FSC Machiche siding is all heartwood, ranging in color from light brown to reddish brown and medium chocolate brown colors. Add sealer and it develops a rich chocolate coloration.

Modern pergola design is a popular choice. Here, the beauty of the Machiche sustainable wood was used to create continuity with the exterior wall and the wood-wrapped counters of the outdoor kitchen interior. This gave the structure all the same advantages of color, strength, and low maintenance while creating warmth and an inviting outdoor dining space on the stone deck.
