Stunning Ipe Rain Screen Design in Massachusetts

Written by on

Imagine finding the right property for your dream home and having a house that is not your dream home already on it. This is the situation that a Massachusetts couple had and, fortunately, the property was for sale. They purchased the property, tore down the old house and began the building process anew.

The architectural firm of Anmahian Winton Architects of Cambridge, MA were the design firm of choice and Gilman, Guidelli and Bellow Custom Builders of Somerville, MA was selected as the general contractor. The Climate-Shield® Rain Screen System™ was specified as the cladding system because of its exceptional performance, design flexibility and ease of installation.

Anmahian Winton has incorporated the Climate-Shield rain screen system with Ipe cladding on other award winning project designs. Climate-Shield allows for minimal obstructions on the building envelope, greatly improving the performance of the rain screen design.  With this system, there is nothing to detract from the beauty of the wood on the exterior.

The stunning architectural design was enhanced by 1 x 4 Ipe rain screen siding to which a semi-transparent Seal Once finish with a semi-transparent Cape Cod Gray tint was applied. Ipe hardwood siding was chosen for its stability, durability and sustainability.  The 1x4 size was selected for its wonderful linear accentuation. The Seal Once Cape Cod Gray tint was specified for its unique ability to immediately create the appearance of gracefully aged, silvery, fully seasoned siding.

The beauty of the Ipe cladding is that, over time, the wood siding will naturally develop a beautiful silvery gray patina that is so pleasing to the eye.  The design goal is for the Cape Cod gray tint to gradually weather off the siding over time, exposing the Ipe wood slowly to allow it to develop its own natural silvery patina. Therefore, the entire structure appears to be embraced in lines of siding that form a peaceful continuum of silver gray

The finished project will be a “tip of the hat” to all parties involved.  It is obvious that great care and attention to detail has been exercised in the planning, design and craftsmanship of this residence to make it a true one-of-a kind family home.  Stay tuned for more pictures of this completed project.
