Are all Fire Treated Woods the Same?

No. There are many different wood species and different treatment methods. Let's take a look at fire treatment methods first. Most of the fire treatment options for wood are for interior use only. Many are surface treatments only.

FRTW is an acronym for fire retardant treated wood. The term 'fire retardant treated' means that the fire retardant was applied under pressure. This is a far better process than a brush-on or surface treatment. With FRTW, the treatment penetrates deeper, lasts longer, and protects more of the wood. SaferWood with Thermex-FR is recognized as the clear-cut leader of fire retardant treatment methods.

Different wood species take the fire retardant better than others. Softwoods like pine, Hemlock, Hem-Fir and Douglas Fir take the treatment better than hardwoods. Thermally modified softwoods take the treatment very well, too.
